What is 8021 English General Paper? 

The Cambridge International AS Level English General Paper (8021) is a one-year course and examination designed to develop learners’ ability to understand and write fluent English on contemporary global, social, and cultural topics. 

Exam Structure:

The assessment is split into two mandatory papers that each account for 50% of the final AS Level grade: 

• Paper 1 (Essay): Lasts 1 hour and 15 minutes. Students choose one question out of a choice of 10 contemporary topics and write an essay of 600–700 words using their own knowledge.
• Paper 2 (Comprehension): Lasts 1 hour and 45 minutes. Students answer compulsory questions based on provided reading material, testing their ability to analyze, interpret, and evaluate data and arguments.

So, should you take 8021 English General Paper? 

In short, yes. The major advantage to gaining this AS level qualification is that it demonstrates transferable skills that will certainly be of interest to your future college or university and will boost your application. These skills are multi-subject disciplines, like the ability to evaluate issues and analyse information. It also helps to demonstrate your command of the English language in terms of written expression and comprehension. Even better, you can get all this without adding greatly to your workload. Yes, you will need to practice a little and be generally aware of contemporary global issues, but beyond that there isn’t a lot of content to memorise. 

Are there any disadvantages to taking 8021 General English Paper?

Well, not really. As an AS-level, it’s more of an “added extra” for your higher education application than a high stakes entry requirement qualification, so there’s not much of a risk. You should bear in mind, though, that if English is not your first language and you are planning to apply to study abroad, you will probably also need an English proficiency certificate such as IELTS or TOEFL alongside it.
